The Sorbonne University Foundation is mobilising to finance current and future research into the coronavirus and similar viruses.
In the framework of the urgency of the SARS-Cov2 epidemic, research teams at Sorbonne University have been working tirelessly for several weeks to ensure that their work makes effective progress.
An exceptional budget of €500,000 has been made available, but researchers need more money to go faster and be more efficient.
We are facing an unprecedented epidemic. We must act quickly. Research teams are beyond mobilised.
Now is the time to give!
Five main priorities were chosen by the working group set up by Professor Bruno Riou, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Sorbonne University and Medical Director of Crisis Medical Director on COVID-19 for the PA-HP.
- Epidemiological studies
- Translational Studies
- Pathophysiological studies
- Clinical research and infection prevention, care and control measures in health care and community settings
- Ethics/Human and Social Sciences
Crisis and Attack Centre (CASC)
Participate in the creation of a unique simulation site for everyone: knowing how to protect yourself in order to take good care of oneself. Encourage all stakeholders to interact, including pre-hospital and hospital teams, firefighters, armed forces, police, the gendarmerie and their respective special forces, as well as crisis psychologists. In addition, the general public and students will be trained.
Our fundraising objective: 1 million for the 2nd phase of construction. After the refurbishment of the premises (financing acquired) construction of the infrastructures: immersive room, control room, observation and evaluation stations.

Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI)
Contribute to the creation of a think tank for research and training in Artificial Intelligence (AI): setting up chairs of excellence, creating doctoral programs, supporting and hosting interdisciplinary projects and responding to invitations for tenders. Some twenty industrial partnerships have been agreed on (from startups to large corporations) which will make it possible to finance 2 million euros per year until the end of 2022. Sorbonne University will provide €1 million per year.
- The creation of chairs: from 1.5 to 2 million euros
- The Image Wall (free use for researchers and students, with a 3D projection room inside): €246,000.
- The AI Library: €6,000
The Institute of Hispanic Studies (IEH)
Help renovate the Institute of Hispanic Studies, rethink its use, improve facilities for students, academic researchers and guest delegations, make it accessible to people with disabilities, restore its identity as a prestigious building and make it a true international crossroads of Iberian and Latin American culture.
- Construction of the auditorium: €550,000
- Construction and fitting out of the garden and the terrace-cafeteria: €695,000.
- Restoration of the mural fresco by Francisco Mateos: €55,000
Finance 4-year scholarships, from the second year of the Bachelor’s to a completed Master’s. These scholarships are awarded to deserving first-year undergraduate women enrolled in demanding courses (dual or dual-disciplinary courses). Indeed, despite their higher success rate than men in the first year, women are a minority among Sorbonne University students in scientific fields (41% of students, and only 27% in the math-IT stream).
Fundraising objective: €5,000 a year, i.e. €20,000 in total for a bursary.
Passports for the Olympic Games (PPJO)
Support annual scholarships to accompany students in competitive sports. In addition to the existing facilities at Sorbonne University, students preparing for the Olympics will be able to finance internships, competitions, physical therapy or training. The University has 40 high-level sporting students.
Fundraising objective: €3,000 a year and per top-level student athlete
Offer deserving but financially challenged students the opportunity to experience a new culture and language in an international setting.
Fundraising objective: €5,000 per student for one semester.
Passports to the Master (PPM)
Contribute to 5-year scholarships, from a Bachelor’s to a completed Master’s, awarded to deserving high-school students with financial difficulties. The financial support is accompanied by tutoring by a mentor from the sponsoring company.
Fund-raising objective: €10,000 a year, i.e. €50,000 in total for one fellow.
Research and education in Astrophysics - Institut Astrophysique de Paris
Support research and education in astrophysics and enable scientific advances (black holes and exoplanets, for example) that are becoming more and more regular, alongside the development of optics, large-capacity telescopes and the increasing power of calculation and modelling machines. The aim is to attract the most brilliant doctoral students internationally (in string theory, modelling, data analysis) by providing them with material support and hosting them in the best possible conditions.
Fundraising target: €100,000
