The great adventure of knowledge
Sorbonne University is a public university, created on 1 January 2018, by the merger of the Paris-Sorbonne University and Pierre and Marie Curie University. It is structured by three faculties, in the fields of arts and humanities, science and engineering, and medicine.
As a multidisciplinary research university in the heart of Paris, Sorbonne University is resolutely global. In cooperation with its partners, it creatively and innovatively fulfils its missions of teaching, research, innovation, mediation and technology transfer for the benefit of the common good.
Sorbonne University is a pioneer in the pathways of knowledge and tackles major contemporary challenges such as climate change and sustainability, digital transformation and the data revolution, personalised medicine, open science, and more. On the strength of its shared values—quality and integrity, freedom, transparency and collegiality, diversity, the exchange of ideas—it ambitiously pursues its public service mission and dedicates itself to the creation and development of knowledge, at the heart and at the intersection of disciplines.
Sorbonne University promotes equal access to knowledge, from bachelor's degrees to doctorates and in life-long learning. At the end of high school, when returning to school or throughout a career, it provides demanding teaching based on the spirit and methods of research, and allows students to develop their own multidisciplinary career path. On its campuses, in Paris and in its marine stations in the regions, it boasts state-of-the-art equipment conducive to successful work.
Because there can be no success without the chance to flourish, Sorbonne University helps to improve the living conditions of students who are in need, offers a wide range of sports and cultural activities and encourages student initiatives.
Sorbonne University contributes to current public debates through a host of events open to everyone. On its campuses, all kinds of people have the chance to discover and share knowledge: courses, conferences, events, the discovery of unique collections, shows or concerts, etc.
Innovation and entrepreneurship
The transfer of technology and expertise is a priority for Sorbonne University. It promotes entrepreneurship and supports promising startups from its community through multiple value-adding and investment instruments. Sorbonne University's economic partnerships, from startups to large companies, further strengthen the economic and societal impact of its research.
An open and global university
To perform its missions and succeed in its projects, Sorbonne University is developing a dynamic partnership policy. Its laboratories are co-managed by national research organisations and leading academic partners. In 2018, it created the Sorbonne University Alliance, which among other things, defines the orientations of the Excellence Initiative for the implementation of the Sorbonne University Strategic Plan.
In the French regions of Île-de-France, Brittany, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Occitania, it works closely with local authorities and businesses, contributing to the economic development of the French regions.
Particularly active within the European university and scientific area, and thanks to its strategic international partnerships, Sorbonne University contributes to the influence of French science and humanities. Committed to research and to the success of its students, with a spirit of diversity and openness, Sorbonne University participates in the great adventure of knowledge at the service of society.
