Cessation or termination of doctoral training

Cessation or termination of doctoral training

The preparation of the doctorate takes 3 years. Exceptionally, at the supported request of the doctoral student, a continuous caesura of a maximum of one year may be taken once. The caesura must be part of the doctoral student's professional, study or personal project:

  • Taking other courses;
  • Acquiring other experience in a professional environment in France or abroad;
  • Engaging in civic service in France or abroad;
  • Creating a business as a doctoral student-entrepreneur.

During the caesura, the doctoral student totally suspends their research work. It starts at the beginning of the semester and must be taken before the second semester of the third year of the thesis. If the doctoral student receives funding dedicated to the preparation of the doctorate, the caesura requires the agreement of the funding organisation and the employer. The non-disclosure provisions of the Sorbonne University's Doctoral Charter continue to apply during the caesura and the doctoral student must respect their obligations. This caesura is not counted in the duration of the doctoral course.

Premature termination of doctoral training

It may be the case that, for various reasons, the doctoral student has to stop their doctoral training. There are two possible situations:

  • The termination is not due to a dispute, in which case the doctoral student contacts their doctoral school to find out how to proceed,
  • There is a dispute, in which case each stakeholder of the doctoral project is entitled to refer the matter to the Commission for Dispute Prevention and Resolution.

The faculty of medicine is closed to the public and operates according to a business continuity plan (research, pedagogy, administrative) since Monday, March 16, 2020. The closure of the faculty to the public effectively results in the cancellation of all courses in face-to-face. Research activities and vital administrative activities are maintained, under the conditions specified by the university administration in the Business Continuity Plan. Beyond the end of classroom lessons, university libraries are closed. The situation is constantly changing, staff and students are invited to consult their emails, the university intranet and the FAQ to stay informed.

All users (students and staff) have access to more precise information on a dedicated page:

The Faculty of Medicine teaches the 3 cycles of medical studies: from PASS (integrated into the faculty) to the 3rd cycle including DES, DESC, DU and DIU. The lessons are given mainly on two sites: Pitié-Salpêtrière and Saint-Antoine. The faculty also provides paramedical education: speech therapy, psychomotricity and orthoptics. The Saint-Antoine site includes a midwifery school.
