ISYEB

All known and a new dino-age amber classified within seven global forests

Peter Vršanský, Júlia Kotulová, Helena Pálková, Dušan Starek, Silvia Antolíková, Štefan Jósza, Martina Havelcová, Lucia Vršanská, Miroslav Hain, Daniel Peyrot, Jan Hinkelman, Romain Garrouste, Michal Hulvák, Adrián Biroň, Marián Golej, Martin Števko, Kamil Fekete, Hemen Sendi, Lucia Šmídová, Didier Néraudeau, George Poinar, Dany Azar, Júlia Káčerová, Štefan Nagy, Francisco Irineudo Bezerra, Tomáš Mikuš, Tomáš Mlynský

Amber is likely the most durable organic material, persisting without decay in ground roughly 10,000 times longer than technical glass. That is why amber is widespread where geology is suitable. Here we show that all world ambers from hundreds sites belong to just 7 global forests:…

Constructing a lower-bound estimate of the global number of insect species on a hyperdiverse empirical foundation

Robert K Colwell, La Melissa Guzman, Dirk Steinke, Anne Chao, Da H Janzen, Winnie Hallwachs, Aus Baker, José L Fernánde-Tria, Paul D N Hebert, Joyce I Frank, Robert Puschendorf, Donald L J Quicke, Rodolphe Rougerie, M Alex Smith, Nelson Zamora, Michael J Sharkey

Estimating the number of insect species on Earth is a daunting challenge. The current consensus estimate—about six million species—is likely far too low, as we will show. Our estimate of the global number of insect species rests on a sample of more than 1,600,000 DNA-barcoded insect specimens…
