French Language Courses at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (SIAL)

Adapted to all levels, SIAL's French as a Foreign Language (FLE) courses correspond to internationally recognized certifications. These courses are intended for individuals, students and professionals wishing to improve their level of French.

Within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Service d'innovation pour l'apprentissage des langues (SIAL)  organizes all training in French as a foreign language through:

  • Intensive short courses
  • Semestrial courses
  • University diplomas
  • Preparation workshops for French as a foreign language (FLE) certifications/exams

These courses are open to:

  • Sorbonne University students
  • Students outside Sorbonne University (in France or abroad)
  • Professionals, job seekers
  • Doctoral students, researchers

Intensive courses in French as a foreign language are offered twice a year:

  • In September (before the beginning of the first semester)
  • In January (before the beginning of the second semester)

The objective of these courses is to consolidate your French language skills at a given level (CEFR) thanks to an intensive rhythm of 30 hours over 2 weeks.

Who is the course for?

The intensive French as a Foreign Language (FLE) course is for you if you're:

  • An ERASMUS exchange student at Sorbonne University
  • A student at Sorbonne University
  • A student from another university (in France or abroad), EU or non-EU
  • A doctoral candidate or a student on a scientific research trip
  • An employee of a public institution or a private company (in France or abroad)
  • A job seeker

How is it run?

SIAL-FLE offers two types of intensive courses:  
1.    A General French course (FG) of 30 hours over 2 weeks: 3 hours a day, in the morning or in the afternoon, adapted to your level.
2.   A 30-hour French for Academic Purposes (FOU) course over 2 weeks: 3 hours/day, morning or afternoon, for levels B2/C1.

Semester-based courses in French as a Foreign Language are offered twice a year:
From September to December (semester 1)
From January to May (semester 2)

Each semester consists of 13 weeks of classes.

What are the different courses on offer?

We offer a range of courses in different formats: face-to-face, hybrid, remote learning, and adapted to your level (CEFR). The different courses we offer are the following:

  • Intensive General French (FGI)
  • General French (FG)
  • French for Academic Purposes (FOU)
  • French for Specific Purposes (FOS)
  • French as a Second Language (FLS)

Open to all professionals in the context of continuing education, the university diploma in French as a foreign language allows you to improve and perfect your mastery of French.

SIAL offers two university remote learning diplomas:

  • A university remote learning diploma in French as a foreign language - French for university purposes, CEFR B2 level.
  • A university remote learning diploma in French as a foreign language - French for university purposes, CEFR C1 level (Humanities, Social Sciences or Science.)

These diplomas are offered only by distance learning twice a year:

  • From September to December (semester 1)
  • From January to May (semester 2)


Who are the French as a foreign language university degrees intended for?

These diplomas are for you if you're:

  • An ERASMUS exchange program at Sorbonne University
  • A student at Sorbonne University
  • A student from another university (in France or abroad), in the EU or outside the EU.
  • A doctoral candidate or a student on a scientific research trip
  • An employee of a public institution or a private company (in France or abroad)
  • A job seeker

What are the prerequisites for access to these diplomas?

To register for the B2 level university diploma, you must prove that you have already obtained the CECRL B1 level.
Accepted supporting documents include: the French baccalaureate OR a diploma of an equivalent level with an ENIC-NARIC certificate of equivalence, OR a diploma certifying your level in French (SELFEE-Sorbonne B1 or DELF B1 diplomas only.)

To register for the C1 level university diploma, you must justify the B2 level of the CECRL.
Accepted supporting documents include: the French baccalaureate OR a diploma of equivalent level with ENIC-NARIC equivalence certificate, OR a diploma certifying your level in French (SELFEE-Sorbonne B2 or DELF B2 diplomas only.)

The preparation courses for French language certifications are entirely remote, and are offered twice a year:
From September to December (semester 1)
From January to May (semester 2)

Please note: SIAL-FLE is not an examination center. To register for the exams, you must contact SELFEE.

What are the different courses offered?

SIAL-FLE prepares you for French language certifications entirely via remote learning.
Depending on your level, you can follow the preparation courses for the following French language certifications:

  • DELF B2
  • DALF C1
  • SELFEE B2
  • SELFEE C2

An expert team dedicated to students

Every SIAL course is designed and implemented by a team of specialists in the French language, didactics and the teaching of French as a foreign language, including:

  • An assistant director exclusively in charge of FLE
  • A pedagogical engineer specialized in French as a foreign language
  • An administrative manager, in charge of reception, in both French and in English
  • A specialized teaching team
