Franco-Indian cooperation: a new milestone for Sorbonne University

From 17 to 20 February 2026, a delegation from Sorbonne University travelled to India as part of the High-Level Academic and Scientific Meetings (RUSH) symposium, held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The trip featured several key highlights: participation in the RUSH symposium, the inauguration of the Franco-Indian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Global Health, bilateral meetings with Sorbonne University's strategic Indian partners — the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) — as well as initial discussions with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT).

Strengthening high-level cooperation

As part of the 2026 India-France Year of Innovation, the trip has reaffirmed Sorbonne University's commitment to strengthening high-level cooperation in pursuit of one of the institution's core missions: to educate multicultural younger generations who are open-minded, globally aware and equipped to develop collaborative solutions to tackle the many challenges of today.

Led by Guillaume Fiquet, Sorbonne University’s Vice-President of International Relations, Socio-economic and Territorial Partnerships, the delegation brought together representatives from the university’s Faculty of Health, the Paris Brain Institute and the Department of International and European Relations.

The RUSH symposium: High-Level Academic and Scientific Meetings

Held on 18 and 19 February on the AIIMS campus, RUSH convened leading figures from French, Indian, and international higher education and research to engage in dialogue on key strategic priorities. Topics included the internationalisation of higher education and research, the role of artificial intelligence in universities, key drivers of international cooperation, and research and innovation.

Guillaume Fiquet represented Sorbonne University during a plenary session on “AI in higher education and research: opportunities, innovation and risks for the universities of tomorrow.” His participation provided an opportunity to present Sorbonne University's unique approach based on an inclusive and sustainable AI model, showcasing the work carried out by the Sorbonne Cluster for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI).

Inauguration of the Franco-Indian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Global Health

The inauguration ceremony of the Franco-Indian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Global Health took place during the French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to the fourth edition of the global AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

The event was attended by Emmanuel Macron, India’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Their Excellencies Sanjeev Singla and Thierry Mathou, respectively Ambassador of India to France and Ambassador of France to India, as well as representatives of Sorbonne University and its partners, including AIIMS and the Paris Brain Institute.

Jointly coordinated by Sorbonne University, AIIMS and the Paris Brain Institute, the new centre aims to structure Franco-Indian scientific cooperation in the field of AI applied to global health.

It will enable the development and testing of concrete AI applications for healthcare, from diagnosis to the treatment of the most common diseases, particularly brain diseases. The centre aspires to improve access to diagnosis and prevention through more accessible innovative solutions that can be deployed on a large scale.

Strengthening the dynamic cooperation with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

The strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), fully aligned with Sorbonne University's international roadmap, is part of the “Integrated Health” programme, supported by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Space, and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs since 2022.

The programme seeks to develop a wide range of cooperative initiatives that address major contemporary global health issues through workshops, seminars, summer schools, mobility programmes, dual degrees, joint doctoral supervision and collaborative research projects.

A high-level meeting attended by the Director of IITD, Professor Rangan Banerjee, and his teams provided an opportunity to review the implementation of the partnership's structural initiatives and to explore new avenues for cooperation in engineering, information technology and entrepreneurship, in connection with the future Sorbonne University’s Cité de l’Innovation. Sorbonne University is expected to welcome a delegation from IITD in 2026.

Promising collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences

High-level institutional discussions were held between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Sorbonne University in September 2024, during the Indo-French Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Neuroimaging, Brain Health and Global Health.

These exchanges led to a shared recognition of the need to establish a structured, long-term framework combining research, education, innovation and public policy. This convergence of ambitions was formalised in September 2025 through the signing of a tripartite letter of intent between Sorbonne University, the Paris Brain Institute and AIIMS, establishing their shared commitment to create a Franco-Indian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Global Health.

The Sorbonne University delegation met with the director of AIIMS, Professor M. Srinivas, and his colleagues, enabling exchanges among faculty members and researchers from both institutions. The depth and quality of discussions between medical specialists have opened the way for concrete clinical collaborations.

The two institutions also reviewed the Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2026. The inauguration of the Franco-Indian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Global Health marks a major milestone in cooperation between the two institutions and, more broadly, between France and India.

The Department of International and European Affairs at Sorbonne University supports faculty wishing to develop cooperation projects with Indian partners.
